Shepherds Pie (Cottage Pie)

This shepherd’s Pie is made with ground beef instead of lamb. So, in many parts of the world, they would actually call this a Cottage Pie. Either way, I love it and it’s delicious.


2 ½ lb. Potatoes, cut into 1” pieces
1 lb. Ground Beef
2 Tbs Dried Minced Onion
6 oz. Can Tomato Paste
¾ c Milk
1 tsp Thyme
1/8 tsp Pepper
2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
½ tsp Dried Minced Garlic (4 cloves)
10 oz. Mixed Vegetables
2 Tbs Butter
½ c Shredded Cheese


Pre-heat your oven t 375°. Cook potatoes in boiling water until done, about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, sauté onion and garlic in oil, add ground beef and cook until done, about 10 minutes. Add in tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce, stir. Drain the potatoes and mash well. You should have at least 2 cups of mashed potatoes. Take about ¼ of the mashed potatoes and add to the meat mixture. Also add in ¼ c milk, thyme, pepper, and veggies. Mix well and place in a 2 qt. casserole dish or 9″ pie plate. Bake for 25 minutes. While that is cooking, take the rest of your potatoes and mix with milk and butter. When your “pie” is done, top it with the mashed potatoes then spread the cheese evenly over the potatoes. Pop it back into the oven for another 20 minutes or until the potatoes have slightly browned.
